Have you read A Scandal in Bohemia? Irene Adler is a wonderful character in that story, and she becomes "THE woman" in Sherlock's life. While she doesn't appear much in the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories, she is an important character in the TV adaptions: both the BBC's Sherlock and CBS's Elementary. I think it's because the idea of Sherlock being in love is so interesting. After reading A Scandal in Bohemia, my students wrote stories about Sherlock and Irene's next meeting. They imagined a new story. You can read one student's beautiful story below. STUDENT EXAMPLE Irene and Sherlock's Next Meeting “Take a look at this.” Watson said as he was reading the newspaper while Sherlock Holmes was finishing his breakfast. Holmes did not pay any attention to him as he had something else on his mind- a woman he couldn’t help but be intrigued by. That woman, Irene, had bested Holmes on a handful of occasions and that earned Holmes’ admiration for her. “That woman, Irene I believe, has a performance at the local theater scheduled later this afternoon.” That quickly caught Holmes’ attention. Holmes had been waiting for an opportunity to meet up again with Irene, perhaps to have a rematch to compensate for all those times she outwitted him. He wasted no time to get dressed up and get ready to go to Irene’s performance. Holmes headed out with Watson as the opening for the show approached. As they got near the theater, Holmes spotted Irene outside greeting guests. “Go on ahead without me” Holmes instructed Watson as he was walking towards Irene. Irene noticed Holmes walking towards her and turned her attention to him. “We meet again, Holmes.” Irene said with a smirk, knowing her past “accomplishments” against Holmes. “You look great, I am looking forward to your performance.” Holmes left and continued his way into the theater. He wanted to say more, but found himself lost for words. He felt his heart pounding fast every time he was confronted by her. Holmes wondered whether this was love. He seated himself alongside Watson inside the theater and watched the show. Holmes watched in admiration and despite his somewhat bitter attitude from being defeated by Irene, he could not resist praising her performance. The spectacular show ended and Holmes waited outside for Irene to come out of the theater. However, it had been a concerningly long time for the staff to come out. Holmes felt as if something was wrong. Moments later, the police arrived at the theater. Holmes, out of curiosity and due to the nature of his personality, followed the police. Holmes walked into the dressing room where the performers and Irene got ready. He discovered a grim scene. Irene was murdered, and there was a note left behind the killer. The note was signed by Jack the Ripper. Holmes inspected her body and saw a stab wound. Holmes, at the moment, felt nothing but rage. All he wanted to do in that moment was to find the killer and exact revenge. Holmes, who had always been a stoic and calm individual even under stress, showed emotions. Tears rolled down his face as he gripped the piece of paper, despite it being a piece of evidence. Then he recollected his thoughts and calmed himself down. If he wanted to find Jack the Ripper, he must think logically and rationally. He went back to the body and crime scene to collect evidence. He searched the crime scene thoroughly and noticed a piece of cloth stuck on the door frame. It could be nothing, but at least it was a lead. From that moment on, Holmes vowed vengeance and swore to avenge Irene’s murder by hunting and serving justice to Jack the Ripper. Isn't that story wonderful? I love how she brought in the idea of Jack the Ripper. It's amazing what students can creative when they are given freedom! If you are learning English, you should consider writing your own fanfiction story.
